Frequently asked questions

What do I need to scan negatives?

An iPhone or iPad, a bright white screen (tablet, laptop or a second phone in Negatone's Lightbox mode) and one sheet of plain paper to put between the screen and the film.

My scan shows ripples or a grid.

That is moiré from the screen pixels. Put a sheet of plain paper between the screen and the film, or raise the film a little above the screen.

Colours look wrong or blue.

Make sure the film type matches (colour negative, B&W negative or slide) and tap the blank film edge to lock exposure. Switch off True Tone and Night Shift on the screen you use as a light.

The frame is cropped wrongly.

In the review screen tap Frame and drag the four corners to the edges of the picture, or tap Auto to detect again.

Where are my scans?

In the Photos app, in an album named “Negatone · <roll name>”. If you allowed only adding photos, scans are saved without an album.

How do I restore my purchase on a new device?

Open Settings in Negatone and tap Restore purchase while signed in with the same Apple account.

Does Negatone remove dust and scratches?

No. Blow the film off with a bulb blower before scanning.

How do I delete my data?

Settings → Reset all data, or delete the app. Photos in your library are not touched.
